The building and plumbing trade is often portrayed in a bad light
(sometimes fully justified) but it should be recognised there for every
'cowboy' there are numerous reputable companies. TV programmes such as
Rogue Traders do a good job highlighting 'cowboys' but it should also
be remembered that showing reputable companies would not make good
viewing. To protect yourself against 'cowboys' there are some simple
rules:-
Never be tempted to use companies that knock on your door as they were "in the area and noticed you need work
doing". The chances are you don't need the work and will
be ripped-off.
Never allow anybody into your property without checking their identity.
It is a legal requirement that all Corgi engineers carry their ID cards
at all times. Do not be afraid to ask
to see it.
Always clarify whether the price you have been given
is an Estimate or a Final Price. Estimates have a nasty
way of increasing.
Never pay in full upfront unless you have the companies address (not a PO Box) and contact details
and are given a signed receipt. If you are paying upfront, Pay by Cheque so you have proof.
Never pay for work that
you have not authorised. If additional work is required any
reputable company will explain what it is and agree a price before
carrying it out.
Always ask for a Schedule of Work
where terms of payment are agreed and signed by both parties.
